This week, you will begin by deepening your understanding of Logical Fallacies; this Module will prepare you for Paper #3
Paper #3 will focus on Logical Fallacies. Begin learning more about them by reading these pages in your book:
The Structure of Argument: In Chapter 11, there is a section called “Common Fallacies,” pages 315-339 (end of the Chapter). This section includes ideas for papers.
This handout is a clear, comprehensive guide—please read:
(Links to an external site.)
I’m also attaching my own handout that explains Logical Fallacies; it consists of short definitions and examples.
Respond to the questions below to develop a deeper understanding of Logical Fallacies:
Choose 5 logical fallacies from one of the lists you read, and write 5 original examples of these logical fallacies.
Telling Your Story: Explain a time in your life when someone used one of the Logical Fallacy to convince your of something that is not logically true, such as to get you to behave a certain way, to make you feel bad about yourself, to punish or berate you, to convince you of something you now know what not true, to trick you, to justify something they did, to stop you from knowing the truth about something, etc. Which Fallacy or combination of Fallacies on the list did they use? How did they use the Fallacy or Fallacies? Why do you think they had to use a fallacy? Did you believe the fallacy was true or false, and how do you feel about the way they used it now?
COMMENT and react to other people’s lists of logical fallacies and their Stories. Can you relate? Do you think the examples work well?
