For this assignment you would normally be finding a child to observe and carrying out in-person observations, taking notes, and interpreting what you find. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on social interaction in person, we have adapted (by we, I mean myself, Maria Petrescu and Christie Fraser who are also teaching the course) the assignment for you to be able to your observations of children in recorded videos. As discussed in class in Week 3, we all agreed that using a cross-cultural approach to observing children would be a great way to understand cognitive development and learn rich information about people all over the world. What a surprise that being confined to home could offer an opportunity to go all over the world in this assignment!

The film : Babies can be accessed using Ryerson Library (just requiring your login). This film covers the first year of life of four babies from: Mongolia, Namibia, Tokyo and San Francisco.

You have two choices for how you do your assignment:

Cross-cultural approach: follow two children so that you can represent two cultures in your paper. Here you would be identifying three aspects of cognitive development that you are either able to compare or contrast in the videos.

Individual development approach: you can follow one child throughout the video to comment on aspects of change at each stage of development. Here, you would try to identify at least one (but more, if you see them) aspects of cognitive development at each stage, and then identify how things have changed over time for that one child.

Step 1: Review the major areas of cognitive development

Before deciding on 1) vs 2), it is important to review what it is that you will be looking for in the videos. This is in terms of all of the concepts we are learning in the class, as well as specific aspects of thinking. Remember, you cannot write about motor development or social development on their own – this course is in thinking so your work must be related to cognition. So my suggestion is to review the topics we have covered and have yet to cover – make a list, perhaps, of things like perception, memory, etc. Also, take note of important behaviours and what you have learned from experiments. This is just to get your mind focused on what to take notes on – not a comprehensive account.

Step 2: Watch the video and take notes

You will be required to submit your notes, and if you’ve got that cognitive lens from Step 1, then you just need to watch the video and make notes of anything you see (time-stamping is a good idea) that links with thinking – even if it is just ideas. You don’t need to formally link any of this with your notes, it is just an opportunity to flag interesting things that you can go back to.

Step 3: Now it’s time to go back to the video and go into more detail in your observations, trying to link to basic ideas from the textbook, as well as identifying behaviours (e.g., exploring?) that are relevant to our course and to thinking.

Your rich notes will form the section of Results

Your links with the text will be the basis of writing your Discussion.

Step 4: Write out background notes from text and from Rogoff. Write your own notes from the relevant sources – these will form your Background Section.

Step 5: Write up the methods that you used in observing the videos and honing in on what was important in your methods section.
