(I have attach a 2 article which I chosen from my collage database please read both articles and write comprehensive summary of both articles in one essay.)
Your essay assignment for this section will require you to find, read, and write about an article from an academic journal. The article must be related to topics in American history covered in this section of the course.
On the BlackBoard home page for this course, you will find a link to the library’s databases. From the home page, find the box for “library and resources,” and under “WCJC Library resources,” you will find a link called “library databases.” Click it, and log in following the instructions on the login page. If you have trouble logging in, contact the library. Once you’re in, scroll down to the Genealogy and History section and click on the link for the JSTOR Journal Archive. Go to “Advanced Search.” At the top you will input search terms for the topic you’re looking for. Beneath that, you will see a section called “Narrow By.” Under that, you will be able to click boxes to designate the item type you’re looking for. ONLY click the box for “articles”!!!! Below that, there is a list of disciplines to help you further narrow your search. Definitely click the box for History, but you may click other boxes depending on what you’re looking for (like African American Studies, American Studies, Political Science). You don’t want journal articles related to topics like math or the sciences.
You should try to find an article on a subject of interest to you, but it MUST be related to a topic in American history that falls roughly between the years 1800-1840. Use keywords related to your topic as search terms for your JSTOR search. Reading the textbook chapters for this section will give you some ideas for topics related to this period of American history. Once you find an article, you may download it, print it, or read it directly from the JSTOR website.
The paper you write will be a comprehensive summary and evaluation of the article. Start your essay with your name at the top of the page. Beneath that, put the full citation for the article in Chicago (Turabian) style. You should find a link on the page with your article for the citation. Just copy and paste it to your paper. Then begin your paper. Your paper needs to explain and summarize the main topic of the article. What is the article about? What is the author trying to say about that topic? What is the thesis of the article? What evidence or examples does the author use to help make his or her points? How does the author use this evidence to support his or her argument? After you have fully summarized the article, its main points, and its evidence, you will need to evaluate the article. Do you agree or disagree with the author’s position? Why or why not? Does it match up with what you have learned about the topic from your textbook readings? Do you find that the author’s evidence and examples are convincing? Why or why not? Does the author use any examples or arguments that you find particularly strong? Does the author use any examples or arguments that you find particular weak or unconvincing?
Your essay must fall into the following parameters: 2-3 pages long (appx. 600-900 words), 12 point font (Times New Roman or Calibri), double-spaced, one-inch margins. You will submit your essay via a TurnItIn link on BlackBoard in the assignments folder for Unit 2. Check the Course Schedule for the due date. Late submissions will be accepted within one week of the due date at a 10% PER DAY penalty (including weekends). If you have any questions, ask!!
