Researched Essay: Part 2 Guidelines
INTRODUCTION & BODY OF THE ESSAY: PRESENTING YOUR ARGUMENT
· NOTE: You will use both personal experience (but limited – do not write long narratives) and knowledge, and source material (much more than personal experience). Your sources must be excellent.
The second part of your Researched Essay should include the following:
You must write a two-paragraph introduction.
The first paragraph will include:
1) A “hook” to capture your reader’s interest.
2) Background information about your topic.
The second paragraph will include:
1) Statements that lead your reader to your thesis.
2) Your thesis.
Note: You do not have to use sources for your introduction, but if you do, use
no more than two, create a proper MLA in-text citation for each source, and add each source to an MLA-style works cited page.
Body: Develop Your Argument
A multiple paragraph section that fully develops the argument that you identified in your thesis statement. In this section, you can use both personal experience (but very limited – do not write long narratives) and knowledge, and source material (again, much more than personal experience). Your sources must be excellent. (Please see your Core Knowledge Review PowerPoints re: excellent sources and let me know if you have any questions.)
NOTE: Do not include a counterargument, rebuttal, or conclusion in Part 2!
MLA format (8th edition) is required for both the draft and the final revision of Part 2. Remember, you must include proper in-text citations and a complete works cited page for the sources used in Part 2.

1500 word minimum/no word maximum for Part 2. [Remember, Part 2 should be as long as it needs to be to be fully developed in all areas. Inadequately developed papers will receive much lower scores than fully developed papers.]
No more than 40% of Part 2 can be summarized, paraphrased, or directly quoted from sources. Most of the words used should be your own. For Part 2 (the body paragraphs, not the introduction), you must include a minimum of 6 completely different excellent sources, but no more than 8 completely different excellent sources.
You can – and should – use “I” and other first-person pronouns when appropriate. Do not use “you” unless it is in dialog or in a direct quotation.
Also, please remember: drafts, peer reviews, and final revisions will all receive grades. Specific grades for each will be discussed by your instructor.
