Synthesis Essay 3-4 pages 100 Points Due Saturday, November 14th
In this section of the course we have considered three different genres of writing: Process Analysis, Comparison and Contrast, and Division and Classification. We have considered how each genre has different Audience, Purpose, and Strategies. This essay asks you to combine two of these genres in a single essay. What this means is that you will organize your essay as one of the genres, and then perform the strategies of another at some point in the essay.
Think here of the examples that we have read and the ways in which the authors synthesize genres. For example, in “My Daily Dives in the Dumpster,” Eighner writes a Process Analysis essay, but uses the strategies of Comparison and Contrast to explain the process that he is describing. Similarly, in “The Truth About Lying,” Viorst, while writing a Classification and Division essay, uses Comparison and Contrast to show the reader different kinds of lies. There are many combinations in our readings, and any two of the genres can be combined to make a Synthesis Essay. You will find the Practice prompts at the end of each reading helpful in choosing a topic.
You can think of your essay as having a main genre and a support genre. For example, a Classification and Division essay that also uses Comparison and Contrast. This means your essay will be organized around the Classification and Division genre; I will look for Audience, Purpose, and Strategies of that genre. Since you will be using Comparison and Contrast along the way, I will look for the Strategies of that genre as well.
As always, I will look for clarity and grammar at the sentence level. I will also look for clear and consistent paragraph structure. Be sure to edit for spelling mistakes, typos, grammatical errors, and good paragraph development and transition. The essay will be due on D2L by Saturday, November 14th.
