Short Critical Thematic Essay.

Things Fall Apart is a 20th-century African novel about the major character, Okonkwo, a legendary wrestler “known throughout the nine villages and beyond” (Achebe qtd. in Irele 9). He was fearless in battle, a wealthy farmer, and achieved fame at a young age. Without hesitation, he defended his homeland Umuofia. Steeped in cultural beliefs, Okonkwo obeyed the ancestors, ancient tribe’s men, and the Oracles. But, Okonkwo’s “chi” was not a lucky one. Finding he and his family exiled for seven years from his homeland for accidentally killing a fellow clansman, Okonkwo could not protect his homeland from the invaders. Even his first-born son, Nwoye, was captivated by the foreign missionary’s religion. Umuofia proved vulnerable to the outsiders’ migrations to their land. Upon his return home, Okonkwo was just not willing to change. Okonkwo would not live to witness things fall apart. Movements and Migrations results in a cultural disruption too much to bear.
