Logging Scars Report

The context

Issues related to forest conservation often have multiple perspectives. This diversity of perspectives arises because of the involvement of multiple stakeholders working on a limited land base with multiple potential uses. The ability to carefully and critically evaluate potentially contentious issues related to sustainability is essential to effective and informed forest conservation. The objective of this report is for students to get experience in examining an issue with differing perspectives, gain experience in providing a clear and unbiased summary of the different points of view, and to follow this summary with an informed and supported opinion.

The issue

Recently, the Wildlands League published a report on persistent logging scars in the boreal forest. Logging scars are the legacies of roads and landings that are created during forestry operations. They argue that these scars represent unaccounted for area that has been permanently affected by harvesting activities and which, are having a negative effect on the sustainability of forest practices in Canada. The forestry industry, however, does not agree.

The report

In the report, students will clearly summarize this issue and problem at hand, provide analysis and interpretation of the perspectives presented by both Wildlands League and FPAC, and provide an informed synthesis and opinion on the basis of the readings below and additional supplemental information (e.g., other academic articles or news, or opinion pieces). Students are encouraged to connect their essay to other ideas, readings, and content presented in the course. In summarizing the issue and in making your assessments, be sure to base your ideas on evidence, rather than sentiment.
