I WILL BE CHOOSING AND UPLOADING THE ARTICLE BUT YOU CHOOSE WHICH ONE OF THE BIG THREE THEORIES YOU WANT TO USE TO ANALYZE THE ARTICLE. IT CAN ONLY BE ONE THEORY AND MAKE SURE ALL QUESTIONS IN THE GUIDELINE ARE ANSWERED. I ALSO ADDED MY TEXTBOOK; WHICHEVER OF THE BIG THREE YOU CHOOSE, THERE IS A CORRESPONDING CHAPTER ABOUT THEM AND THEIR THEORIES.
GUIDELINES FOR WRITING AN ANALYSIS OF A JOURNAL ARTICLE
First, is an analysis of an article appearing in a scientific journal. And, since several of you have expressed confusion about exactly what is expected in the analysis, below are a few guidelines that may help facilitate your completing the assignment. That is, the first assignment might involve an article where Marxian or Conflict theory is employed. Your second writing assignment can employ structural functionalism while your third will focus on symbolic interactionism. Of course, you can do either, if at the end of the semester you will have covered all of the Big three theorists in a writing assignment. Note, your second writing assignment involves responding to an Original piece of classical theory and the third will have you Apply theory to a contemporary issue or problem.
The first writing assignment should include answers to many of the questions below:
1. What is the research problem? What is/are the hypothesis/es? What are the reasons (the theory), so far as they are offered, showing that the hypothesis is a plausible assertion?
2. Does the article provide a coherent theoretical background?
2.1 Does the theory, implied or explicit, explain a given class of social phenomena?
2.2 Does it identify social dimensions or properties?
2.3 Does it state the nature of the relations between these dimensions/properties
2.4 Do the propositions form a deductive system?
3. To the extent that your answer to the questions in 2, above, is no, what’s missing?
4. What can be explained using the author’s theoretical perspective?
5. What cannot be explained?
6. How useful is this theoretical perspective?
7. How does this article agree or disagree with your text, other reports, and class lecture material?
8. From where do the author’s ideas come (i.e., what other writers, either historical or contemporary have influenced the author? You can see this by looking at the author’s citations)?
In writing this assignment you ought to keep in mind SOC204 is a Writing intensive course. Therefore, all of the writing for this course must be accurately spelled and grammatically correct. You have until 3PM to turn the paper in so do not stress over having it ready by class time.
