FROM THE PROFESSOR:
Think of an example of intentional social change. You can focus on reform or revolutionary change. This can be change through the efforts of a specific group, organization, or government official. You can use an example of change from the class materials or come up with a new topic that we haven’t talked about in class.
The paper should address the following:
Who promoted the change? What specific changes were they seeking? What type of change does this represent? Is it a movement? Reform or Revolution? Broadly, is the change being sought in material conditions, is it cultural, or is it both?
What strategies were employed toward creating change? Here, draw from chapter 11, and determine if and how facilitative, re-educative, persuasive and power strategies were used to make change happen.
Was the intended change successful, or not? Why was this? Here, incorporate insights from the book.
Theoretical application:
Employ at least one of the theories from chapters 7-9, or collective action framing from chapter 3 to examine how, or if, the movement was able to gain support and momentum.
What characteristics of the systems your group was trying to change either facilitated or prevented change (look at political process theory in chapter 7, framing in chapter 3, or Skocpol’s structural dynamics of revolution from chapter 9)
This paper should be 4-6 pages long, double spaced, 12-point font. Use at least 3 different sources in your paper, in addition to the book (so 4 total). You don’t need to use a specific citation style (such as ASA or APA, although it’s good to familiarize yourself with those standards), but you do need both in-text citations as well as a references list. I should be able to tell where each assertion or new piece of information came from.
FROM JEN THE STUDENT:
This paper is actually due to the professor a couple days after the EssayPro deadline so I have a chance to look it over and finalize it.
In keeping with the theme of what most of my discussion posts and papers have been on this semester, I would like to discuss the intentional social change behind racism and the BLM movement. As you can see, the professor has asked to indicate whether this intentional change is reform or revolutionary and I think I’m leaning toward revolutionary.
I will include/upload the necessary chapters from the textbook (Chapters 7-9) and any available lectures/ readings.
