Independent Research Project: Exploring History Through Artefacts (25%) This project includes two parts: PART 1: Written Report (15%) You will be asked to conduct an online exploration of museum artefacts. They can be local museums (Chimczuk Museum and the Francois Baby House) regional, national or international museums. While exploring the museums, you will select 2-3 artefacts of interest pertaining to events, persons, issues or cultural groups that fit within the timeline and physical boundaries of the course.Once you have chosen your artefacts, you will write a report on the event, issue, person etc… represented by those artefacts. Your report should address the following questions: Why did you choose these artefacts? How did they deepen your understanding of our local history? For historians, what are the values of such primary sources? What are the limitations? PART 2: Presentation (10%) You will be required to select one of your artefacts and create a replica of that artefact (whether physical or virtual) and record a brief presentation (based on the information found in your written component). We will not have enough time for every student to make a presentation to the class so I will upload them all to Blackboard and classmates can view them all on their own time. The presentation should be between 5-10 minutes. You will be asked to conduct some additional research that includes secondary sources that will support your primary resources. Assignment Requirements: • 4-5 double-spaced pages; • Primary sources (can use the artefacts themselves, which would include tools, weapons, archival documents, photographs, artwork, clothing, diaries, narrative accounts etc…) • 3-4 Secondary sources (monographs, academic journal articles, MA and PhD theses, etc.); • APA style • Bibliography HELPFUL SECONDARY SOURCES DATABASES: • America: History and Life • Bibliography of Native North Americans • JStor • Project MUSE • Proquest Dissertations and Theses • Proquest Social Sciences • Web of Science HELPFULPRIMARY SOURCES DATABASES: • Archive.org • Early American Imprints • Early Canadiana Online • Early Encounters in North America • Indigenous Peoples: North America OTHER HELPFUL RESEARCH ENGINES AND SOURCES: • Google Scholar • Google Books • Michigan Pioneer and Historical Collections (available on Blackboard Learn) • Jesuit Relations Online (available on Blackboard Learn)
