General Iron is a metal scrapping company located in the affluent Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago’s Northside. Because of their lack on compliance with air quality standards, the Lincoln park community and their allies have successfully petition for General Iron’s shutdown. As a result, General Iron has requested permits from the city to move their operations to Chicago’s southside in a community with a make of over 90% Hispanic and Black residents. Because of General Iron’s poor compliance record and community relations, their presence on the Southside is seen as a threat to residents in the area. Residents are concerned that General Iron’s emissions will increase poor air quality in a part of the city where air quality has been significantly compromised for decades due to former and current factories. An increase in poor air quality will exacerbate health conditions (asthma, eye and nose irritation, heart, and other respiratory condition) that residents have experienced for decades.
