•Consider 1-3 countries in Africa, ME, Asia, Central or South America
•Cannot be Jordan, Iran or the country your interviewee was from
•You will only need 1 for the final, but I want you to have options
•Start researching about the country’s history, culture (i.e. language, religion, communication, food, etc.), political , environmental and social aspects
•Research tourism for the country as well
•Look at a variety of sources (academic articles, news-domestic/international publications, tourism ministries/departments)
•Take note of visa requirements, etc.
•Keep track of your resources for citations
In lieu of an exam, you will provide an in-depth critical reflection of: 1) your newly informed perspectives on travel using concepts and ideals learned in class; 2) insights gained from the group interview had with an international volunteer AND; 3) discuss how you will prepare to travel to diverse and untraditional destinations. Your final reflection submission should be structured in the following order (Please label your sections in your submission accordingly):
Section 1) You should begin by specifically highlighting your biases discussed at the beginning of the semester (use resources such as your map activity) and how what you have learned over the past three months has influenced your current perspective. Use your completed class reflections as points of reference, if needed. You should also discuss/ use specific knowledge gained from the Global Exchange Agents and how it may have influenced your current position.
Section 2) Consider also the knowledge gathered in your interview with an international student. This is where your interview analysis will go. Note that your interview guide should be placed at the end of the document as an appendix. See details below.
Section 3) You should note any shifts in opinion that have a) changed, but also b) perspectives which remain the same. Be sure to provide depth in your reasoning on these changes and/or consistencies. You are welcome to reiterate here and expand on what you discussed in your oral reflection.
Section 4) Name and select a country/ destination in Africa, the Middle East, Central/South America, or Asia. This destination CANNOT be the same of the volunteer you interviewed, Jordan or Iran. Imagine you are preparing to travel to this destination for a month-long trip abroad. A) Describe the geographic location, history, economy, political and social environment of your selected destination; B) Highlight 3-5 customs/ traditions which may be found/ experienced while visiting the location; C) Describe how you may need to prepare to communicate, greet locals, dress or otherwise during your stay; D) Address how your personal background (i.e. race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. ) may influence your overall travel experience and how these aspects may require further preparation for your visit to the destination in question.
Section 5) Now, with your tourism professional hat, create a “Country-name Responsible Travel Guide”. Highlight 5-10 integral tips for tourists who are planning to visit the same destination. This guide should be practical but considerate of the culture and traditions one may encounter during their trip. Consider if some tips should be specific to persons traveling from certain regions of the world, or to address aspects such as gender, etc. Be creative and thoughtful. Make use of ALL resources at your disposal. If you have questions, directly email me.
*Use any of the course activities, assignments, readings and reflections as points of reference. Responses should be no longer than 5000 total words. You must include a reference page for any sources used (this includes any from our class or others you find on your own). The last two pages of your submission should include a citation page, followed by an Appendix A-Interview Guide. A minimum of five sources should be used. Of those five, you must have at least one academic, one domestic, AND one international source. Citations should be in APA style.
