Final Project

Give an introductory presentation on the piece to your volunteer – Explain what they are about to listen to and what you think they should be listening for. Talk about the composer, the musical ascetic (for example, Minimalism in the music of Steve Reich), how the piece is performed and other details that will help them understand the piece. A minimum of FIVE substantial points need to be presented.
The student should document in writing the information that is presented on during the introductory presentation. (This will be necessary for the final report – again FIVE points need to be presented)
Both you and the volunteer should listen to the entire piece together. (If the work is longer than 15 minutes, only focus on the first 15 minutes.)
Prepare a series of questions for the volunteer after listening to the piece. Potential questions could be: What was your overall impression of the piece? What specific details did you notice? What parts of the piece did you not understand? Did you hear and experience the ideas that were discussed beforehand? (These are just examples, and you should form your own specific questions) A minimum of FOUR questions need to be asked.
Document the volunteer’s responses to the questions and the discussion that is developed from it.
Listen to the piece one final time together.
Ask the volunteer what they heard different this 2nd time through. Ask them the same questions you asked after the first listening, but see what answers are different or more nuanced.
Documentation The documentation that is submitted should include the following:
Part 1 – A summary of the introductory presentation that you gave to the volunteer. Make sure to be specific enough that I have a clear sense of what was communicated to the volunteer. (Again a minimum of 5 points must be presented)
Part 2 – Include the list of questions (minimum of 4 questions) that you asked the volunteer after listening to the piece. Also, include the volunteer’s answers (a summary of the answer) and the discussion that the questions prompted. (Or your response to what they say)
Part 3 – Write a summary of the volunteers answers after the second round of listening. Highlight what changed from the 1st listening to the 2nd listening.
Part 4 – Write your own personal response to what you observed from the entire process. Examples of things to answer are: What did you learn from teaching a piece of music to someone? Do you hear the piece differently from going through this process? What kind of musical ideas did the listener focus on and prioritize in the listening? (These are examples. I want to get a personal view of what your experience was during this listening project) The personal response should be a minimum of 300 words.
