1–Sam is a 70 year old, newly widowed male. The loss of his partner has been incredibly difficult leading to decreased sleep, decreased appetite, increased crying spells, and increased feelings of loneliness. He has two adult children that live in another state and one in another country. They have expressed extreme concern that his grief is not subsiding and have worked to entice him to move close to one of them. He has agreed to counseling to positively move forward in his life.
Hello, Sam. It’s nice to meet you. What brings you here today?
“Well, my daughter and my son are concerned about my frame of mind. Their mother passed about a month ago and it’s been hard for all of us. Cassie, my daughter, was very close to her mother. They’d talk all the time on the telephone. But now, with Barbara gone, Cassie is worried about how I’m doing. I suppose she has a point, I have been having a hard time accepting the idea that Barbara is really gone.”
What kind of difficulties have you been experiencing since the loss of your wife?
“Mostly just feeling numb. Barbara had been in the hospital for several months before she passed, so I had sort of like a little routine. I’d get up and make breakfast and then go to the hospital. I’d pick up the newspaper and a cup of coffee for each of us at the gas station on the way there and then I’d sit with Barbara for the morning. Sometimes, if she was having a good day, we’d talk about the stories in the paper. And she’d like it when I would read the comics aloud to her – there’s one about this old man and his wife that we both like, so I’d read that aloud and describe the look on their faces or something. I think she liked that better than if I showed her the comic in the paper. So, then, I’d leave for a while and take care of errands or chores at the house and then come back to have dinner with Barbara.
Now that she’s gone, it feels like I don’t have anything to do. I don’t have much interest in reading the paper. I don’t really have a lot of interest in most things. I find myself lost in my thoughts. Sometimes I forget what time it is and realize that I haven’t eaten any breakfast or lunch. ”
Do you feel stuck in your grief?
“That’s a good way of putting it. It feels like I’m stuck in something. I keep thinking the next day, when I wake up, it will be a little easier, but it isn’t. It’s like that Groundhog Day movie – I just feel like one day is a repeat of the last one and I’m just going through the same thoughts and things over and over and over again.”
