The “Perspective” assignment: 10% of the final grade.
The “perspective” is like a research proposal. Often, when we are faced with a research task, we will not immediately understand the specific questions we are trying to answer. We’ve all be trained in the construction of thesis-driven arguments, but how does one find a thesis statement without a direct prompt? You have to make the prompt yourself by formulating the specific and direct question you are attempting to answer with your research.
The “perspective” will help us understand our audience: what they know and what they need to fully understand in order for us to achieve our goals.
To understand our audience, we will be writing what is called a “perspective”. This document will detail who we are addressing, what they know, and what they need to know. This information may seem obvious at first glance but writing our clear and direct answers to these implied questions will reveal vital information about the research we need to conduct and the methods we need to use in our communication in order to be successful in our goals.
Once we understand the problems we face in our project, we can then gather the necessary information needed to solve those problems. In our situation, we can assume that our readers will be struggling with the impacts of isolation as they apply to the readers’ physical, mental, and emotional health as they endeavor to remain productive while working remotely.
You are detailing, for yourself, who you are writing to.
Within the assignment, you are an HR representative for a large organization. You are free to select a larger organization to model or make it up entirely.
The perspective you are exploring then is all of the employees of this large company. The resulting memo will need to address the varied situations of the employees as you offer best practices to cope with the mental, physical, and emotional effects of isolation. I would attempt to categorize the perspectives based upon the varied situations I can reasonably assume most people will be struggling with. We are all in a pretty good position to imagine isolation at the moment.
Specific examples of situations:
Some employees will be isolated alone. Some will be isolated along with others. Some will have childcare concerns. Some will be primary caregivers. Some will become sick themselves. Etc.

Here is where our research questions should become clear. We can safely assume that employees recently placed in remote working conditions do not know the best ways to perform that work while dealing with the unique challenges or remote work during a pandemic. Our goal is to help them remain productive – so they need us to research the best practices to work from home. However, there are some unique aspects to this question because we are in the middle of a pandemic. So, we need to also address these unique concerns. The fundamental question then becomes “how can one remain productive in isolation during a global health crisis?”
For me – the specific research questions before us break down into 4 categories:
How to remain productive while working from home?
How to remain physically well while in social isolation?
How to remain mentally well while in social isolation?
How to remain emotionally well in social isolation
