Essay 2 Prompt

Using Bram Stoker’s Dracula and one of the articles that was given to you about vampire fiction or Dracula, compose an essay that argues for the importance of understanding the scholarly article in order to understand a major theme, scene, or argument in the novel. Your thesis should answer two questions: “how does this critical work apply to Dracula?” and “why is it important to apply this critical work to Dracula?”

Your paper should be in a format that contains an introduction with an arguable thesis and a roadmap, body paragraphs that support the thesis with both your analysis and quoted evidence from both texts, and a conclusion that re-emphasizes your thesis.

Your body paragraphs should use specific examples from the text of Dracula in order to illustrate why the criticism of it is important to consider. While I am not providing specific numbers of quotes you need to have, I will say that every time you make an assertion, you will need an example, whether quoted or paraphrased.

The final version of the paper (not this thesis and introduction) should be:

about 1500 words (about 6 pages).

written using either MLA or APA format including a Works Cited page

given a title that reflects your argument

Examples of a Good Thesis

Backstein’s article “(Un)Safe Sex: Romancing the Vampire” claims that female readership and enjoyment of vampire novels is related to the heroic and erotic vampire introduced in Twilight, but the enduring popularity of Dracula among female readers suggests that the sexual pull of the vampire is not related to the safety that is produced by a female author writing male sexuality.

Freud’s concept of the unheimlische can help a reader understand that Dracula is not a novel about the fear of a foreign culture taking over but of a foreign culture taking root in one’s own culture.
