Discussion: Vision Statement W/ Peer Responses

You may remember in the story of Alice in Wonderland when she searches for a way out, she comes to a fork in the road. “Which road should I take?” she asked the Cheshire Cat. “Where are you going?” the cat responded. Alice said she didn’t know. The smiling cat replied, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will lead you there.”

It is a common belief that what you learned in the first grade is the base of your success. This story about Alice in Wonderland is a good example. Alice wanted to get out of Wonderland, but she did not know what road to take. In life, many times some people are of the same way. This also applies to some companies and organizations.

The Lowe’s vision is rooted in serving our customers. We’re guided by our mission: Together, deliver the right home improvement products, with the best service and value, across every channel and community we serve. This is the statement for Lowe’s Home Improvement. It fits their strategies as they are transforming their supply chain, striving for merchandising excellence and operational efficiency, and providing customer engagement. While it may not have the largest inspirational appeal, it does clearly state what they are trying to achieve.

2. Review the Business Insider article, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says multibillion-dollar failures are actually a good thing and evaluate the CEO’s perspective. Jeff Bezos highly believes that in order to succeed you must first fail. As stated in the link, Amazon tried to implement an Amazon Fire phone, but it was an example of a failure (Gilbert, 2019). This failure, however, paved the way for the Alexa and Echo. The failure of the Fire phone could be an example of the unfreeze process. The organization had something that needed to change, because it wasn’t going to work. The change step was repurposing some of the technology from the phone to the Echo and Alexa. The refreeze would be the finished product of the Echo/Alexa. Something positive became of something so negative. In this case, the Alexa came from the ashes of the Fire phone.

Hello class,

Write an inspiring vision statement for an organization where you work or have worked. If the company has one, you may use it or revise it. Explain why you think it has an inspirational appeal and the link to the corporation’s objectives and strategies.

U-Haul’s vision is to meet the needs of our people now, without hindering the needs of future generations. I think that U-Haul’s vision has an inspirational appeal because they are working on the present, while innovating for the future. As the organization continues to perform, different generations will operate within the company and continue building on what previous generations left or already innovated. For example, the efforts of reducing waste by, “Pursu[ing] proactive solutions to pollution prevention, energy conservation and waste reduction in accordance with our principles to reduce, adaptively-reuse and recycle materials.” (Vision & Goals, n.d.). The advances in technological innovations for years to come, combined with U-Haul’s efforts for an improved future can potentially aid U-Haul’s vision of not diminishing future generations needs. Attempts at keeping expenses at an ultimate low, the recycling and reusing of materials will help U-Haul’s efforts of low expenses.

and evaluate the CEO’s perspective. Identify possible reasons for success or failure. Research and tie success or failure outcomes to the three phases of Kurt Lewin’s force-field model of change: unfreezing, changing, and refreezing.

Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos perspective on failures is quite brave, yet interesting. Like what he stated in the article, “I knew that if I failed, I wouldn’t regret that. But I knew the one thing I might regret is not ever having tried.” (Gilbert, 2019). A failing attempt at something does not mean one has simply lost, it means another opportunity has arisen with one’s current knowledge with the potential to build from something simplistic into something great. Kurt Lewin’s force-field model of change for Jeff Bezos may be an interesting one to tie Bezos too; because Bezos is not afraid of failure and is in a constant transformational mindset, unfreezing, changing, and refreezing is unlikely for Bezos. Donald & Creed, (2014), stated that, “The simplicity of unfreeze–change–refreeze could be attractive to practitioners because it may work in some highly controlled situations.” Though Amazon seems controlled, new innovations will not always be successful, therefore the term ‘refreezing’ in Lewin’s force-field may not be practiced by Bezos too often.
