I have to respond in essay form to the following discussion using my text book as the source. The text book is Communication by Morale, Spitzberg, & Barge, 3rd Edition. The material from the text book needs to come from Chapter 4. In the response essay, we are to use specific examples, text, terms, etc from Chapter 4 to offer a retort.
I have my own perception of others around me, and my own perception of myself. Everyone thinks they know about other people and what they are like, but that is just through the image others give off. In person, I try to give off a certain image, one of someone who is diligent, organized, and respectful. I do this because I want others to respect me and know that they can rely on me. When I see others, they are placed into a schema in my brain, “a framework that helps people organize information and place it into a coherent and meaningful pattern” (Morreale et al, 2013, pg. 48). I try to see others in a positive light and look at the things they are good at. I like to assume the best of people and that they would help me, as I would try to help them.
Communication plays a giant role in how we perceive each other. Unfortunately when I communicate with someone more, I start to dislike talking to them. With my classmates or coworkers, I try to be very polite and respectful about everything. I find it rude to talk bad about customers, bosses, teachers, other classmates, etc. Even if I agree with what they are saying, I rather keep that to myself and only talk about the positives I see in others. I feel like nothing good could come from trash talking people around you. This is only a difference in our personal beliefs and individual histories, and who’s to say holding in your negative feelings about others is a good thing? I bet others find it bizarre that I think like that. The norms of one environment could be very different than another, and one is not objectively better than the other. If two people’s norms or beliefs are too incompatible, they probably won’t work well together or be best friends. But just because we all have our own norms and beliefs doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to work together.
