The first annotated bibliography (due in week 4) will consist of eight sources and then the second (due in week 8) will include the next eight. These sources must be academic in nature consisting of scholarly research journal articles only. They cannot be books, textbooks, popular magazines or popular websites. You will receive no credit for these. You also may not use the Bible, any version of the DSM or the course text as sources for this assignment. You will not receive any credit for these.
Annotated bibliographies are a means of critically thinking through the source and its application to your research topic. They are often used prior to starting a research project, as you would research the material, briefly summarize it, critique it, and discuss how it might be used. In this book of nonfiction based on the journalist’s experiential research, Ehrenreich attempts to ascertain whether it is currently possible for an individual to live on a minimum-wage in America. Taking jobs as a waitress, a maid in a cleaning service, and a Walmart sales employee, the author summarizes and reflects on her work, her relationships with fellow workers, and her financial struggles in each situation.
An experienced journalist, Ehrenreich is aware of the limitations of her experiment and the ethical implications of her experiential research tactics and reflects on these issues in the text. The author is forthcoming about her methods and supplements her experiences with scholarly research on her places of employment, the economy, and the rising cost of living in America. Ehrenreich’s project is timely, descriptive, and well-researched.
The annotation above both summarizes and assesses the book in the citation. The first paragraph provides a brief summary of the author’s project in the book, covering the main points of the work. The second paragraph points out the project’s strengths and evaluates its methods and presentation. This particular annotation does not reflect on the source’s potential importance or usefulness for this person’s own research.

Analytical or critical
An analytical or critical annotation not only summarizes the material, it analyzes what is being said. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of what is presented as well as describing the applicability of the author’s conclusions to the research being conducted.

This editorial from the Economist describes the controversy surrounding video games and the effect they have on people who use them. The article points out that most critics of gaming are people over 40 and it is an issue of age not of the games themselves. While the author briefly mentions studies done around the issue of violence and gaming, he does not go into enough depth for the reader to truly know the range of studies that have actually been done in this area, other than to take his word that the research is unsatisfactory. The author of this article stresses the age factor over violence as the real reason for opposition to video games and stresses the good gaming has done in most areas of human life. This article is a good resource for those wanting to begin to explore the controversy surrounding video games, however for anyone doing serious research, one should actually examine some of the research studies that have been done in this area rather than simply take the author’s word that opposition to video games is simply due to an issue of generational divide.
Please pay attention to the last sentence. It criticizes the author’s research.

What is the author’s thesis?
What are the author’s main points?
Who is the author, what is his authority or background?
Who is the author’s intended audience?
What parts of the subject does the article emphasize or de-emphasize?
Is there any bias or slant in the article?
Are there any obvious omissions that seem important to the ideas being discussed?
Does the evidence clearly support the author’s main point?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article (critical evaluation)?
