CHAPTER 3 WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT
TASK:
Think of someone you know whom you don’t like very much. Maybe you even hate this person.
1. On a piece of paper, write down a description of that person. Write down what it is about this individual’s personality that you don’t like. Be as specific as you can.
2. Now draw a box around what you have written – and at the top of the box write “IS THIS MY SHADOW?”

Consider this: perhaps what you have written down is some hidden part of yourself – some part that you have suppressed or hidden. It is what Jung

would call your SHADOW. Maybe it’s a part of you that you fear, can’t accept, or hate for some reason. Maybe it’s a part of you that needs to be expressed or developed in some way. Maybe you even secretly wish you could be something like that person whom you hate..

You may immediately see a connection, or you immediately reject the idea. Now ask yourself if you have friends or romantic partners who fit the description of the “hated” person. Often this is indeed the case.

YOUR TASK is to discuss what you learned from the task above. How might we project suppressed parts of ourselves onto others, and why do we sometimes choose these “hated” people for our close relationships?

GRADING:

This assignment is graded based on 20 points.

Give a well thought-out and well-formulated reply to the discussion question – one that is well organized and thoughtful = 1 point
Accurately apply 2 concepts from your textbook to this topic, and UNDERLINE those concepts = 3 points/concept (6 points total)
This will require more than just underlining a term – EXPLAIN how the concepts relate to concepts in the book and define them, as need (2 points)
Provide a chapter sub-module number where the concept is found in the book – for example submodule 1.1 or 1.2, etc. (1 point)
Evidence higher order, critical thinking (evaluate, analyze, apply concepts)= 3 point
Write a minimum of 300 words = 2 points
Make minimal grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. errors (capitalize “I”) = 2 points
Discuss what you learned about yourself or the shadow from the task above (evidence insight and higher order thinking) = 3 points
Discuss how might we project suppressed parts of ourselves onto others, and why do we sometimes choose these “hated” people for our close relationships? (evidence insight and higher order thinking) = 3 points

CHAPTER 3 DISCUSSION QUESTION:

This discussion is graded based on 10 points.

The discussion section of this assignment requires that you respond to at least 2 other student’s Chapter 1 Written Assignment entries with a SUBSTANTIVE post of at least 100 words each.

Your posts in the discussion area should exhibit careful thought and logical reasoning. Each post should be at least one well-developed paragraph. Use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. This is graded assignment – do not write as if you were texting or emailing a friend!

*What is a Substantive Discussion Post?

What a Substantive Post Does NOT Involve:

Simply telling us how you “feel” or what you “like” or “dislike”
Merely telling us whether you agree or disagree with your instructor, your classmates, or other sources
Personal attacks
Repeating content already forwarded by other participants in the discussion or in course materials
Reporting that you have nothing to say

What a Substantive Post DOES Involve:

Noting important ramifications of ideas
Showing logical inconsistencies between ideas
Making useful connections between course concepts
Clarifying conceptual meanings
Offering useful examples to ground ideas
Problematizing ideas (showing us how what seems simple is really complicated)
Suggesting how content and concepts can be applied to class assignments

NOTE 1: A substantive post is not necessarily long. A post can be many paragraphs long and fail to offer a substantive contribution.

NOTE 2: A substantive post may appear in the form of a question, description, interpretation or evaluation. The form of the statement matters less than the function of productively forwarding our class dialogue.
