Organisation: Essays are essentially linear and thus it is important to present their ideas in the order that makes most sense to a reader.

Because the module is taught in English and its main topics cover East Asian affairs, it is required to Romanise the names of people or places in East Asian language. Please see the following list:

Romanisation of Korean: Romanisation may follow either the McCune-Reischauer system or the New Government System (2000) but please be consistent.
Romanisation of Chinese: Romanisation should follow Pinyin with regard to the People’s Republic of China, though Wade-Giles may be used with regard to Taiwan. You should ensure that you are consistent. Please do not alternate between Wade-Giles and Pinyin just because some of your sources use one and others use the other.
Romanisation should follow the Hepburn System as used in the Nelson and Kenkyusha dictionaries. Other than very common names (e.g. Tokyo), long vowels should be written with a macron (¯) over ō and ū (and any vowel transcribed from katakana); long e (except in katakana words) should be represented as ei.
