Before we mention virtual teams, we need to define a team, which is an assembly of dedicated employees who share a common purpose and vision as well as a full commitment to every goal.
The following information is from one of my previous lectures over the years regarding a learning organization and information from the Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge. A shared vision involves a group collectively seeking a vision, while team learning, facilitates building collective capabilities. Senge in 1990 stated the fifth discipline of systems thinking connects personal mastery, mental models, shared visions, and team learning together. Systems thinking encompass participation and collaboration at all levels of an organization where there is a common understanding of a system. The discipline helps individuals to predict changing systems more effectively and to act more in tune with the longer processes of the organizations in which we are connected.
In addition, we then must have knowledge and understanding of team challenges and virtual team challenges. Please note that team challenges are also virtual challenges; however, virtual teams have more challenges.
